Get A Quote.After a lot of troubleshooting to narrow it down to the instrument cluster, I decided to remove the pod for the first time and try cleaning the connections on the instrument cluster.
Here's the instrument cluster once it's been separated from the pod. This is for the Here's where the right-hand instruments are located looking at the back side. On the left-hand side were the two problem areas for me: Fuel and Speedometer. So I mapped which signals were coming into the speedometer at the identified rivets at the back of the speedo.
The two red connectors with wires attached that run under the speedo cover are for speedometer reset. The Fuel level sending unit signal and speedometer pulse signals arrive through pins 5 and 2, respectively on the left-hand wiring harness connector.
I planned to simply clean all the connectors first and test to see if I got any improvement. In order to get a good cleaning, I used q-tips soaked in the CRC cleaner to clean the connectors On some pins, I got a light greenish residue On some other pins, I got a black residue Even after the cleaning with the CRC and Q-tips, the connectors didn't look very clean.
So I decided to use a pink eraser. The trick here is to hold the plastic circuit board firmly in place with your fingers while using the eraser so as not to wrinkle or crease the plastic. After the eraser cleaning, the contacts looked a lot cleaner.
I then went to the harness and inspected the connectors there and sprayed with the CRC as well. These connectors all looked very clean to begin with. Finally, I checked the wiring harness end-to-CEB connections for continuity and got something like 0.
I even tried jostling the wires while checking to see if there were any intermittent problems. Everything checked out fine. At this point, I put the instrumentation cluster back into the car without the pod and connected up the 3 wiring harness connectors. Then reconnected the battery and started the car.
GM Instrument Cluster Repair
BTW, I had filled the fuel tank to capacity before starting this repair so I expected the fuel gauge to register full if everything was functioning properly. I also drove the car and the speedometer showed no improvement - still would not function. However, I noticed that with the back of the instrument cluster exposed, I could lightly touch the connections rivets at the back of the speedometer and when I did, the speedometer acted erratically - doing all sorts of funky things.
So, it looked like I would have to go further with the repair and do some soldering. I parked the car, disconnected everything and brought the cluster in the house for disassembly. In order to remove the plastic laminated circuit board, first remove the bulbs.Lusikka uistin
The instrument illumination bulbs are removed in the same manner - there were three of these. Once you get the bulbs out, it's a good idea to test each one to see if it is working properly. I set it to 9 Volts and connected the power leads to the bulb connections on opposite sides. I checked the illumination bulbs as well and all three checked out. Here's a signal indicator I've never seen illuminated before.

Add a Teacher Note to share how you incorporated it into your lesson. After pulling off the trim bezel by hand they have no screws on most models, they just pop off by pulling firmly.
Remove them and you will then be able to angle the instrument cluster out. You may need to tilt the steering wheel down and move the shifter down to make room. There will be one electrical plug in the back. You remove it by squeezing the tabs together and then pull back firmly while wiggling. It can be seized in place, pull and wiggle firmly and it will break loose. Next up you'll need to remove the clear plastic lens. You'll need to use a small tool to pry out on the tabs while pulling up on the lens assembly to remove it.
Work your way around one tab at a time, you can insert a pencil or similar item between the lens and the body to hold them apart while working your way around. Ok now you'll need a few pieces of masking tape and a pen or marker. Rotate all the needles counter clockwise gently until the come to a stop, they should all stop at or just below the zero marks.
Now make a pen mark on the tape just below the top of each needle. This will be important when you put it back together to maintain calibration so don't skip this step. Now that you've made your calibration marks firmly rotate each needle further counter clockwise a few inches. You'll be rotating the needle around the motor's shaft so there will be some resistance especially at first. Don't worry, you won't break the needle if you keep your fingers near the base of the needle and away from the tip while you do this step.
Now pry upwards with a needle removal tool or even a fork, try to pry straight up and not at an angle, the needle will slide right off the motor shaft. Remove all the needles. Now pry outwards on the tabs of the back case to remove it, similar to how you removed the front lens.
Now you can simply lift out the circuit board. In the final pic you can see 7 white stepper motors you'll be replacing. Ok you're now ready to remove the old gm stepper motors and replace them with new ones. Use the de-soldering bulb and the solder iron to suck off the old solder on each of the four pins of each motor. Do not get it too hot for too long or you can damage the circuit board. Now you can pop the motors off the front of the board once all the old solder has been removed.
If it's they're too difficult to remove you need to suck off more solder. Now you simply need to pop your new GM stepper motors where the old ones were, they will only install in one direction so you don't have to worry about mixing them up or getting it wrong.
Make sure you get the correct part number when you buy your stepper motors see link above for correct parts. Then you use the solder and iron to solder on a small amount of solder to each motor's pin. The solder should flow on smoothly, quickly and cool to a even shiny finish if done properly.Over the years of automotive electrical repairs I have learned some very helpful tricks that I like to share.
This one is a common circuit board problem that you can expand beyond just repairing instrument clusters. I have used this method to repair Volvo ABS computers and other circuit board failures.
The pictures below will show examples of what to look for in circuit board repairs. The most common type of failure I see in the circuit boards will not be able to show you in pictures are cracks at the solder point where the wire, resistor, transistor or whatever is soldered at that point. Usually the main connection where the external wire harness connection is soldered to the circuit board electrical connector to circuit board soldered connections.
These cracks are hard to see but the fix is simple, just re-heating solder to weld itself back together for a good solid connection. These cracks will cause intermittent problems or a complete open circuit. You can usually get it to act up by flexing or tapping on the computer or in this case the instrument cluster. The pictures in the gallery below show open circuits that developed and what to look for.
When I get going on soldering a circuit board for repair I usually end up just re-soldering all the main solder point connections. It goes pretty quick once you get the hang of it. Digital temperature control solder station. Important not to get it too hot when soldering circuit boards.
This specific repair was due to an intermittent failing instrument cluster in a Dodge Neon. The speedometer, fuel and engine temperature gauges will drop to zero and illumination lights go off. Basically the instrument cluster goes dead.
